All of the produce grown in our gardens will go to support the Fabius Pompey Outreach. The F-P Outreach supports many families in need. Often times these families struggle to put nutritious foods on their tables. With the help of God, we have the opportunity to provide healthy food options to those families.
Our goal is to create a garden that is both sustainable and productive. Sustainable in both an environmental and economical way. Only organic growing practices will be used in an effort to provide the best produce we can with as few outside inputs as necessary. A church-wide composting program will help with this greatly.
Building the garden with raised beds will also cut down greatly on the use of tillers and the fuel they consume. Once the beds are built, the soil will not need to be tilled again. This not only cuts down on the need to buy fuel, but also keeps the soil light and soft. Cover crops, rotational planting, and composting will help build the soil health and structure.
We plan to expand the garden each year by building 4 new beds each spring. With God’s grace, we pray the garden will grow to include soft fruits, herbs, flowers, and maybe even some orchard fruits. With time, patience, and God’s great providence, we pray the gardens will be very fruitful indeed.
To start, we plan to grow some low growing crops such as carrots beets, parsnips, bush beans, and potatoes. It’s pretty windy up here on our hill, and in order to test the conditions, we’ll keep to low growing crops for now. Maybe just a few test tomatoes and peppers to see how they hold up!
Please feel free to stop by anytime to check out the gardens. If you’d like to help in anyway or have any questions, contact Mike Angello at 677-9249 or by email.
